What are you Attracting?

Imagine yourself as a magnet bobbing around on earth. Then, imagine that all the people you know and all the other people in the world are magnets. Imagine that all the birds, animals, insects, objects, ideas, situations and outcomes are also magnets. As far as the eye can see, magnets are bobbing around all over this planet, attracting and repelling each other, jumping and dancing, and jabbing and holding each other. This is part of what's known as 'quantum physics', which includes the idea that the earth and everything on it are energetic, magnetic and vibrational. Commonly attributed to this is a universal law known as 'the law of attraction'. Because I have referred to this law multiple times in this blog, I would like to explain it further for those who are not so familiar with it.

Think back to a time when you were having 'one of those days'. You woke up on the wrong side of the bed, you dragged yourself out and spilled coffee all over the carpet, you walked past the coffee table and stubbed your toe, you were caught in a traffic jam, and then you snapped someone's head off at work.


Remember that day when everything was going so well. Your partner made you coffee in bed, the train was on time and you had a smooth run, you felt fantastic in your new dress, you received praise from a client, someone hugged you for no reason, you left work on time, and you found a gift from a friend on the front step when you arrived home.

This is how the law of attraction works. It is about how we feel, and how we feel is a result of our beliefs. In the first scenario, because you started the day in a negative frame of mind, unwanted situations continually presented themselves. Each situation exacerbated those negative feelings, taking the day from bad to worse. However, in the second scenario, because you started the day with a positive mindset, desirable experiences flowed with ease, elevating your positive feelings as the day went on.

If you are expecting rain, you will experience rain.

If you are expecting someone to treat you well, they will.

If you are expecting something to prevent you from leaving work on time, something will.

If you are expecting to be successful in an interview, you will be.

Some people may be uncomfortable with the absolute nature of these statements. The law of attraction is absolute. We experience what we believe. If the outcome is not what we are wanting, it means that we are wavering in our beliefs. It can take time to form very strong beliefs.

To attract / manifest experiences that we desire, or the feelings that come from having those experiences, we will need to formulate strong and perhaps new underlying beliefs.

These are:

  1. I am worthy of receiving / worthy of feeling happy - wellbeing is my natural state.

  2. There is abundance for everyone - there is no scarcity.

We also need to practice believing in things that we can't yet see. Applying the law of attraction means that we must be able to imagine the situations that we desire so that we can then expect them. If we focus too much on the concrete realities that we see in front of us, it becomes difficult to believe in what is possible, and the possibilities that have not yet manifested in concrete form are the situations that we are wanting. I like the word 'magic' when talking about the law of attraction. Although the power of the mind and of the universe appear magical, particularly if we're not accustomed to tapping into them, they are not miracles. Using the word 'miracle' implies that situations manifested through the law of attraction are rare and unexpected. And, this doesn't have to be the case. In fact, the law of attraction is at play all the time, whether we are conscious of it or not.

The law of attraction demonstrates that we have the power within us to choose to align with positive beliefs, thoughts and feelings, and that through our alignment, we will attract our greatest good. We do not need to be 'worthy'. By having a positive mindset, expecting the best and being happy, our actions will be positive. Love and appreciation for the world and everything in it is the key to being in alignment. Everything positive flows from there. No situation is happening to us. We are creating every situation and positive outcome that we experience.

The law of attraction sometimes gets a bad rap. This is due to the misunderstanding that it is about acquiring 'things' or money. Also, that it involves things falling into our laps without any action or effort. The law of attraction is about feeling good, and feeling good enables us to live our best lives, having the energy and motivation to move through the world without struggle and sharing those positive vibes with everyone with whom we come into contact. As humans, we should expect to have positive and negative feelings towards the wanted and unwanted experiences that we encounter on a daily basis. These feelings can be seen as information that lets us know whether we're being, doing and having the things that contribute to our wellbeing. When we become aware of the unwanted situations, we can change our focus to the situations that are wanted.

This takes practice. Starting small can be the best way to learn to see the law of attraction in action. Louise Hay used to say to start with the green lights and the parking spaces. As you drive along in your car, start expecting green lights and watch as they magically appear. Expect to find a parking space and it will manifest for you. By expecting the best, you are already in a positive mindset. Abraham Hicks calls this 'being in alignment', 'being in appreciation mode', or 'being in the vortex'. You could call it being happy, feeling positive, or feeling optimistic.

Feeling gratitude in advance is another strategy. Be thankful for the abundance that you know that you will receive. Be thankful that things will go smoothly in your day. Be thankful for the opportunities that will come, the people that you'll meet, and the support that you know that you can count on. Trust, believe and receive. Take action from a place of security and excitement about the possibilities.

This way of living has changed my life. I used to have so much fear about so many things. I have now learned to trust that everything will be okay. In fact, that it will be more than okay. Life is becoming easier because the unwanted is not happening as much and the wanted is happening more often. When the unwanted happens, I know that it is because of the thoughts I have been focusing on. I know that I am fully responsible and that I can change the outcome by changing my focus. I am still, however, in the process of being able to receive the unlimited abundance that is available to me. This is not necessarily a quick fix. It involves mindful practice, where you hear your thoughts and choose to re-think them. It is about changing a habit of thinking negative thoughts into a habit of thinking positive ones. It is then about believing those thoughts and feeling into them until they become part of you. These can be long-ingrained belief systems implanted in childhood, so changing them can take time.

If you're not feeling great on a given day, look for something to appreciate. It doesn't matter how small it is. Smell something, taste something, touch something. This will take you out of your mind and back into your body. Now, notice the positive sensations you are having and the feelings of positivity that result. Make a game of looking for beauty and abundance wherever you go. Create something of beauty for yourself. Your primary job in life is to be in alignment. This means being aligned with your spiritual side, with God or source, with your higher self. This is often referred to as having a high vibration. Be a high vibe human!! Don't meet others at their low vibrations, but rather stay in your high vibe state and allow them to join you. This is the service that you can do to humanity and to yourself. It is joyful, it is fun, it is magical, and it is available to you at every moment.

As you become practiced at achieving this high vibrational state, you will begin to see the evidence of the law of attraction working in your life. You will see it in the little things and in the big things. If your belief in the abundance of money is strong, you may see money appearing in your life as if by magic. If it is easier for you to believe in abundance with regard to relationships, positive relationships may appear in your life first. Our vibrations in relation to each subject in our lives will vary due to our previous experiences, as from these experiences, we have learned what to expect. To keep a high vibration overall, I find that it is best to focus on the things that are going well. I become very excited about everything magical that happens, even if they are just little things. A couple of weeks ago, after I had a psychic reading, I picked up a ten dollar note blowing along in the breeze. This is a sign of the abundance that is everywhere. Magic in the little things helps us to believe that the bigger magic is possible. The unexpected pay rise or refund, the students who request to work with me for a second semester, the people who smile at me on the street, connecting with old friends, and the small signs and synchronicities that appear reinforce my belief that everything is going my way and build my anticipation for a positive future.

This information is everywhere, so dive in and start manifesting a magical life!!

PS I finished writing this post in Le Bon Choix Boulangerie Pâtisserie, walked home, and in the stairwell found a tiny white feather - my angels telling me to keep going :)
