Self Love

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

Self love is possibly the most important thing in the world. It's the secret ingredient in the recipe for happiness, the recipe for success, and the recipe for love. It makes joy possible, it makes confidence possible, and it makes compassion possible.

Yet, sometimes it gets a bad rap...

Self love is not about looking in the mirror with a raised eyebrow and saying "Hello gorgeous", like Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl.

It's not all pedicures, facials, solo coffee dates and gym memberships.

It's not because "I'm worth it".

It's not about ego or competition or comparison.

Self love is saying,

"I don't feel safe in this situation"

"I'm tired and I'm going to rest now"

"I don't want to go"

"I don't have to be perfect"

"I don't want to do this, and I'm choosing not to".

Easy, right? Not always, no...

Self love is not about big-noting ourselves, it's about caring for ourselves. Caring for ourselves enables us to conserve our energy and to create more energy.

That much-needed energy enables us to care what happens to ourselves, and it enables us to care what happens to others. That energy can then flow outwards, contributing to change in the world.

Self love is eating when we're hungry, wearing comfortable shoes, bringing a jacket just in case, brushing our teeth, making our bed, eating nutritious foods, spending some money, saving some money, reading a book, smelling something nice, wearing a hat, laughing, using the air conditioner and going for a walk.

And, it means not going for a walk if we don't feel like it.

Self love means believing in our potential and not putting limits on ourselves. It means allowing ourselves to take risks and make mistakes. It means challenging ourselves. It means having self discipline, and it means indulging ourselves. It means acknowledging our hard work and celebrating our successes. Self love is being able to accept help, and being able to accept love.

Self love means allowing ourselves to be happy, and making changes to enable that happiness.

It is not an added extra,

but

just a place to start...

Why not start today!
